about

The year is 2039. It is a spring night, but we wouldn’t know that because we are underground in the Red Line Chicago Avenue station of the Chicago Transit Authority. The subway car, stalled on the tracks halfway into the station, has not moved in almost a decade, but occasionally flashes to life, strobes its lights, and sheds electric sparks. The platform is littered with trash and junk, torn subway advertisements, a nonfunctional pay phone, and broken turnstiles.

Coming from the gorund above, we hear the sounds of helicopters, military maneuvers, imminent dangers. These sounds wake a few of the people living here, who rise from the trash heaps in which they were sleeping. The subway car occasionally short-circuits and makes public announcements.

lyrics

[ENSEMBLE]
Doors closing
Voices erased
Politicians posing
Entire lives become a waste
Floors caving
Choices destroyed
No savior saving
Everyone is so annoyed

Why the fuck do you think we live here?
You think we love the subway?
No — we like the bus
Why would anyone want to be here?
Four rats in a trap
The world's at war
At war with us

Doors closing
Don't question how
Painkiller dosing
Would be a welcome change right now
More's the pity
Just to be alive
This life ain't pretty
It's a bother to survive

History's a nasty trick
Your parents play on you
It makes you sneeze, it makes you sick
The lies they swear, the lies they swear, the lies they swear are true

Doors closing
Trapped on the train
Bulldozers dozing
Life dripping down the drain
Time running
Out for us all
The enemy's coming — shh, the enemy's coming — shh, the enemy's coming — shh
And we will rise and fight
And we will rise and fight
And we will rise and fight
Or else we fall
